Teaching Your Dog to Lay Down

Teaching your dog to lay down is one of the most important and useful lessons he can learn. Like all obedience commands, both you and your dog will benefit when they are learned.

It's not just about getting your dog to lay so you wont be bothered and want to watch television.

It’s important in several different ways.

The first way is that it looks very impressive to the onlooker, and your dog looks well trained, and a credit to you.

The second way is that, being realistic, not everyone is a dog lover. And not everybody is comfortable with a dog running and barking all around them. They may just feel uncomfortable for themselves or if there are small children around, be concerned that they may be bumped over.

When your dog is in the laying position, he is seen as a lot less frightening and threatening to these people.

As a responsible owner with a well trained dog, it shows that you can take these feelings into consideration and show them that not only you understand their apprehension, but can also put them at ease by getting your dog to lie and stay. If you are needed urgently in another room or the garden, it is important that you can rely on your dog to lay and stay where he is while you attend to the situation.

Knowing that you can trust, rely and depend on your dog to lay for a period of time is just as important as any other command we'll cover.

Ok, so here we go. Remember, short periods of training to maintain his concentration and have fun. This will shine through in your voice.
